Kitesurf Harnesses Size Guide

It is essential to choose the correct size kite harness so your harness doesn't 'ride up' during your kite session. (harness 'riding-up' means when you don't have the correct harness size, or you don't tighten it correctly, it will move up and put. pressure on your ribs, it can also lead to injuring your ribs in a big crash.) The kitesurfing harness comes in sizes from XS to XXL, so you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your body. Below is a size chart for choosing the correct harness type and size for you.

What size kite harness do i need?

The kitesurfing harness comes in sizes from XS to XXL, so the Large size kite harness will fit a waist range of 35"-38". Be sure to check out the Mystic kite harness size chart above to choose the correct kitesurf harness.

Waist vs Seat harness

A kitesurfing harness falls into two types, seat or waist. Seat kite harnesses are more like a rock climbing harness or a nappy, where you step into it like putting on shorts and the straps keep the harness secure and in place with straps around your thighs. It also keeps the spreader bar low, so your center of gravity is lower, which can make you feel more stable. Most kiteboarding schools will use seat harnesses for beginners and students. The reason for this is because when you are learning.. your kite is directly above you (at 12 clock) so the seat harness won't 'ride up' and cause you discomfort. if the kite harness rides up, it will make the kite bar (what you use to control the kite) move further away from you making it more challenging to learn. However, once you graduate from a kite school, and can kite alone, you will be ready to upgrade to a Waist harness

*Note: seat harnesses are also used for small children, as a waist harness may be too big for their small waists.

A kiteboarding waist harness is definitely what you want to get if you plan on becoming a kitesurfer. They provide way more freedom and movement, and are 100 times more comfortable (provided you have a good and new generation harness) and easy to take on and off.

Hardshell vs Softshell Harness

In the past all kiteboarding harnesses were softshell, which means they have no extra support, so when kiting overpowered your ribs and organs would get squeezed together. But in 2015 the hardshell harness was invented, which completely change the game forever. By adding a stiff plate made of fiberglass or carbon in the back of the harness, the power and tension from the kite is distributed around your back and waist. and because it is so stiff it doesn't need such a big surface area, so the harness became smaller giving more maneuverability to the rider. Also the fact that there is less  fabric and neoprene, the harness takes on a lot less water, making it much much lighter while riding.

*Note: the downside of a hardshell is it is only adjustable by the straps, but each size harness has a hard plate for that size, so choosing the correct size harness and correct size spreader bar for the harness is important.

Why Should I Choose a Hardshell harness

A hardshell harness is way more comfortable, it spreads the pressure across your back and waist and prevents the feeling of being squeezed and your ribs and organs taking the pressure. A Lot of people have reported that it helps if they have back pain from kitesurfing. Additionally the hardshell kite harness is alot lighter than a softshell, especially when wet, but also when dry.

Conclusion

The Dirty Habits kitesurfing harness by Mystic is the ultimate kiting accessory for all kitesurfers. The Best Part is you get to be a part of the Dirty Habits Community and feel like a pro on the water.
