Kitesurfing Cape Town Winter Storms
The Dirty Boys just landed back home in Cape Town from Tarifa, Spain for the GKA world championships, and they were treated by one of the biggest storms of the winter (not that big, Cape Town has has a pretty moderate winter so far.)
But with 4.5m Swell and 40 - 55 knots winds forecast, we decided to hit a big wave surf sport, Crayfish Reef in Witsands, The Winds were off shore (next stop Antartica, if you fuck up) lots of rain, and some big rouge sets coming through.
Kitesurfing in winter months in Cape Town is not the best and quite hard to predict which sports are going to work, or actually be possible to kite. However, if you willing to make a mission and drive around the coast and time the storm cells as the cold fronts hit Cape Town and the Cape Peninsular, you can sometimes score some magical sessions.
Cape Town summer is on the way now, and we'll be back doing big air sessions in warm, strong South Easter winds. But no doubt we'll still have some big storms with winter swells hitting us in August and September.
